Taiwan Plans to Roll out E-readers in Schools – PC World
Taiwan’s Ministry of Education plans to offer e-readers to schoolkids on the island next year as part of efforts to further digitize schools and promote reading.
The e-readers are part of a five-year, NT$50 billion (US$1.55 billion) budget earmarked for information technology in classrooms. Currently the ministry is reviewing designs for e-readers and doesn’t yet know how many it will purchase for next year, a representative said.
The only e-reader displayed at the Ministry of Education’s booth at the IT Month exhibition in Taipei on Monday was a color e-reader designed by Aiptek International for young children. The Aiptek inColor e-reader has an 8-inch color screen and 1GB of flash memory for storage. It comes with 20 multimedia e-books pre-installed and costs NT$6,900 (US$213) in Taiwan, according to Hsu Fang-chi, a media representative at Aiptek.

Как сообщает журнал Bookseller, группа американских писателей, включая Урсулу Ле Гуин, решила миновать стадию традиционного издательского процесса и самостоятельно подготовила электронные версии своих новых произведений. Они предназначены непосредственно для чтения на ридерах Kindle and Sony. Организация Book View Press была основана в начале этого года членами сообщества Book View Cafe, в котором состояли 27 авторов, на чьем счету числилось немало бестселлеров и наград.

The e-reader market is beginning to resemble a crowded subway train at rush hour and the latest entry could make it feel even more crowded. Marvell Technology Group and E Ink are partnering on a “turnkey” tech solution based on one integrated chip called the Marvell Armada 166E, with the first devices due in 2010. The chip is designed to render high-res PDFs “ultra fast,” save power, extend battery life and support ePaper in thin formats. For access, it includes 3G, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Through an agreement with FirstPaper, the companies say the Armada also should be able to handle a variety of screen sizes, including larger formats that can handle magazine and newspaper-like layouts and graphics.

После объявления о начале продаж букридера B&N Уолл-стрит уронил акции компании. Goldman Sachs счел, что движение в сторону цифового формата книг наносит урон магазиннной модели B&N. Акции упали почти на 5%. Некоторая логика в этом есть (см. ссылку в предыдущем посте) — в перспективе компании придётся поменять весь бизнес, в отличие от Amazon. Впрочем, это ведь коснётся очень и очень многих компаний…

AFP: HP partners with university to print digital books
The US computer giant announced Wednesday it has teamed with the University of Michigan to offer print versions of more than 500,000 out-of-copyright books in the school’s library.
The books will be available for purchase through online retail giant Amazon and other outlets including HP’s own BookPrep.com, which already offers public domain volumes for print on-demand and purchase.
Судя по всему, этот союз решил войти на тот же рынок, что и Google с On Demand Books.
