Авдеев также заявил, что видит решение проблемы стремительно ветшающего библиотечного фонда в срочном проведении оцифровки книг и переводу их в электронный вид.

По его словам, в России планируется развивать такое направление, как внедрение в библиотеках так называемых “ридеров” – электронных книг. Такие ридеры, пояснил министр, содержат до 2 тыс. произведений, и их можно читать практически как книгу, перелистывая электронные страницы.

Авдеев отметил, что экономически ридеры выгоднее, чем книга притом, что книга стоит 200 рублей, а ридер – около 1,5 тыс. долларов. Однако, если учесть, что он вмещает порядка 2 тыс. произведений, получается, что ридер в 10 раз дешевле книг, объяснил министр.

На днях глава Минкультуры уже сообщал, что в России вскоре появятся библиотеки с электронными книгами.

“Техническая революция заставляет нас переходить на новые технологии библиотечного дела. Это новые носители. Мы сейчас будем делать несколько экспериментальных библиотек, где будут использованы так называемые “ридеры”, – сказал Авдеев 1 декабря в Москве на Всероссийском конгрессе соотечественников.

Он пояснил, что речь идет об электронной книге с иллюстрациями, художественным шрифтом, в памяти которой может быть заложено 2 тыс. книг.

“Следующее, что мы собираемся сделать – оцифровка книг”, – сказал Авдеев.

“Книга стала товаром, причем, товаром дорогим. Мы столкнулись с проблемой формирования российских библиотек. В России 130 тыс. библиотек, из них 46 тыс. публичных. Государство уже не в состояние отвечать за их комплектование”, – отметил министр.

Marvell Technology Group and E Ink are partnering on a “turnkey” tech solution based on one integrated chip called the Marvell Armada 166E, with the first devices due in 2010. The chip is designed to render high-res PDFs “ultra fast,” save power, extend battery life and support ePaper in thin formats. For access, it includes 3G, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Through an agreement with FirstPaper, the companies say the Armada also should be able to handle a variety of screen sizes, including larger formats that can handle magazine and newspaper-like layouts and graphics.

It also provides the library with a self-funding, commercial model helping it to sustain its digitization programs in the future. Unlike other free or low-cost digitization programs, the library retains the rights and ownership to their own digitized content.
